Rugby Speed & Power Testing

Rugby demands explosive acceleration, repeated sprint ability, and powerful change of direction. EPP measures all three — position by position — with the same equipment used by professional academies.

Suitable for: Rugby union and league players of all positions, youth rugby players (U8–U18), semi-professional clubs

What We Test
The Rugby Testing Battery

Every EPP rugby assessment covers these five tests using Photon Sports timing gates, high-speed cameras, and force-platform analysis. Results delivered as a full written report within 48 hours.

1
30m sprint with 5m, 10m & 20m splits
Identifies first-step acceleration — critical for all positions, especially backs and opensides.
2
Force-velocity profile
Rugby forwards and backs sit at very different points on the FV spectrum. This profile produces a position-specific training prescription for each player.
3
5-0-5 bilateral agility
Change of direction speed and bilateral symmetry. Asymmetry is particularly high-risk in contact sports with heavy landing demands.
4
Countermovement jump & reactive strength
Power output directly relevant to lineout jumping, tackle power, and explosive breakdown work.
5
Repeated sprint ability (optional)
For backs and wide players: the ability to reproduce maximum sprint effort across multiple bouts.
What the Data Shows
Why This Matters for Rugby

Rugby is unusual in that players of different positions have legitimately different optimal training profiles. A loosehead prop assessed on the FV spectrum will sit toward force-dominance; a winger toward velocity. Prescribing the same gym programme to both is a wasted training block. Position-specific FV profiling tells coaches exactly what each player needs.

Questions
Frequently Asked
Do you test rugby union and rugby league players?
Yes — both. Sprint profiling, FV analysis, and bilateral agility testing are equally relevant. We adapt interpretation to your position and game model.
Can you test a full rugby squad?
Yes. Squad Analyser from £20 per athlete. Each player receives an individual report with position-specific recommendations within 48 hours.
I play prop — is speed testing relevant for me?
More than you might think. First-step acceleration (0–5m) and power output are highly relevant for props in breakdown situations. FV profiling also identifies deficits that affect scrummaging effectiveness.
