Do You Know
What Your Rugby
Player Needs?

A sprint time tells you your player is slow. A force-velocity profile tells you exactly why — and which training intervention will fix it. Every rugby player we test gets a complete picture within 48 hours.

Position-Specific Testing
Every Position.
Different Data.

Rugby is the only team sport where players of different positions have legitimately different optimal physical profiles. A prop and a winger need completely different training. EPP's force-velocity profile identifies exactly where each player sits — and what to train next.

Props (1, 3)
Scrummaging force, initial drive power, contact acceleration
Force dominant
Hooker (2)
Lineout jump power, breakdown explosiveness, first-step drive
Balanced
Locks (4, 5)
Vertical power for lineout, repeated contact force output
Force dominant
Flankers (6, 7)
First-step quickness, repeated sprint, breakdown acceleration
Balanced / Velocity
Number 8
Pick-and-go power, carrying speed, drive-phase explosiveness
Force dominant
Scrum-half (9)
First-step acceleration, lateral agility, repeated sprint
Velocity dominant
Fly-half (10)
Decision-speed, change of direction, 0–20m sprint
Velocity dominant
Centres (12, 13)
Power in contact, line-break speed, defensive cut speed
Balanced
Wings & Fullback (11, 14, 15)
Top-end sprint speed, repeated sprint, kick-chase range
Velocity dominant

The key insight: A back who spends pre-season in the gym doing heavy squats is training the wrong quality if their FV profile shows a velocity deficit. A forward with a force deficit doing only sprint work is equally misdirected. Without this data, most rugby S&C coaches are prescribing generic programmes — and getting generic results.

The Assessment
What We Measure
In 60–90 Minutes

Five tests using Photon Sports timing gates and high-speed cameras. Every test has a direct application to rugby performance. Full written report with position-specific recommendations within 48 hours.

1
30m sprint — 5m, 10m & 20m splits
Identifies first-step drive phase. Critical for all positions, especially at breakdown. We capture more data points than most professional academies.
2
Force-velocity profile
The most important data point. Identifies whether the player is force-deficient or velocity-deficient, and produces a direct training prescription. Position-specific interpretation.
3
5-0-5 bilateral agility
Change of direction speed left vs right. Asymmetry above 10% is a clinical ACL and hamstring risk flag — particularly relevant in a contact sport with high-load landing demands.
4
Countermovement jump & reactive strength
Power output and RSI. Directly relevant to lineout jumping, tackle power, and explosive breakdown work. Highly predictive of on-field explosive performance.
+
Repeated sprint ability (optional, backs and wide players)
The ability to reproduce maximum sprint effort across multiple bouts — critical for full-game performance at 7, 9, 10, 11, 14 and 15. Add-on for relevant positions.
+
Sprint mechanics camera analysis
High-speed cameras capture overstriding, arm mechanics and hip drive. Invisible to coaches watching at full speed — visible in slow-motion replay.

All squad testing includes individual player reports, position-specific FV classification, and a coaching staff briefing document. Venues: Alexander Stadium (Birmingham) or Platt Lane (Manchester).

As a semi-pro I've worked with plenty of S&C coaches. The force-velocity profiling here is Premier League standard. It told us in one session that I'd been training force when I needed velocity work. Genuinely game-changing for pre-season.
