Expert Guidance

Train Smarter. Move Better.

Our coaches break down the three pillars of athletic performance — running technique, strength, and conditioning — so every session drives real, measurable gains.

Efficient running mechanics are the foundation of every fast athlete. Small improvements in posture, arm drive, foot strike, and stride cycle translate directly into faster times and lower injury risk. Our FA-approved coaches use high-speed camera analysis to identify exactly what's limiting your speed.

Steps/Min at Top Speed

Posture & Alignment

Maintain a tall spine with a slight forward lean from the ankles. Rounded shoulders and hip-sitting are the two most common flaws we identify in assessment. A neutral head position keeps your neck relaxed and stride long.

Technique

Arm Drive Mechanics

Arms drive the legs. Keep elbows at ~90°, drive back with intent, and relax the hands. Crossing the centreline wastes energy and disrupts stride symmetry. Strong arm drive directly increases stride frequency.

Technique

Foot Strike & Ground Contact

During acceleration, drive through a powerful toe-off and strike beneath your centre of mass. At top speed, aim for a mid-foot strike with minimal ground contact time. Overstriding acts as a brake on every single step.

Technique

Acceleration Phase

The first 10–20m is won by horizontal force production. Drive low (45° body angle), use short powerful strides, and gradually rise. Most athletes stand up too early, killing their drive phase and peak velocity potential.

Technique

Stride Cycle Efficiency

Elite sprinters recover their heel high under the glute before cycling forward — this shortens lever arm and increases frequency. Weak glutes and tight hip flexors disrupt this pattern, which is why our S&C programme targets them directly.

Technique

Deceleration Control

Braking mechanics are as important as acceleration for injury prevention. Our 5-0-5 and ADA tests expose asymmetries in how you absorb force. Controlled deceleration means faster direction changes and far lower ACL risk.

Speed is built in the gym before it's expressed on the pitch. Strength and power underpin every athletic quality — acceleration, deceleration, jump height, and injury resilience. Our periodised programmes build a foundation of strength then convert it into explosive, speed-specific power.

Injury Prevention

Targeted work to protect the joints most at risk in speed & team sport athletes.

  • Nordic hamstring protocol
  • Hip flexor & adductor loading
  • Calf & Achilles tendon work
  • Single-leg landing mechanics
  • Rotator cuff stability

Lower Body Power

Glutes, quads, and hamstrings generate the propulsive force behind every sprint. Weak posterior chain = slow acceleration and high hamstring injury risk. We assess single-leg power to identify exactly which side is limiting you.

Strength

Core Stability

A stiff core transfers force efficiently between the legs and upper body during sprinting. Anti-rotation, anti-extension, and anti-lateral-flexion exercises build the stability that holds your technique together at high speeds under fatigue.

Strength

Asymmetry Detection

Our single-leg jump tests flag imbalances greater than 10% — a known injury risk threshold. Addressing asymmetry with targeted unilateral training protects you from injury and directly improves change-of-direction speed.

Strength

Get Your Strength Assessed

Our jump and deceleration tests reveal exactly where strength is limiting your speed. Fix it with a targeted programme.

You can't express speed when you're tired. Conditioning determines how many times you can sprint, how quickly you recover between efforts, and how long your technique holds under fatigue. Our methodology is built specifically for speed-sport athletes — using the energy systems that matter most to your game.

Repeated Sprint Ability

Speed Endurance

Longer sprints (40–80m) at 90–95% max effort with extended rest (3–5 mins) develop the ability to sustain near-maximal speed without significant deterioration. Essential for the final 20 minutes of any match.

Conditioning

Repeated Sprint Ability

RSA training — 6–10 × 30m sprints with 20–30s rest — mimics the real demands of team sport. Our Squad Analyser measures your RSA fatigue index directly, giving exact data on where your conditioning breaks down and by how much.

Conditioning

Hill Sprint Training

Hill sprints are the safest, most effective tool for building acceleration power and conditioning simultaneously. The incline enforces correct mechanics, eliminates overstriding, and reduces hamstring injury risk — a cornerstone of our SAQ Speed Clinic.

Conditioning

Aerobic Base

A strong aerobic base accelerates recovery between high-intensity efforts and between sessions. Zone 2 work 2–3× per week enhances mitochondrial density and heart rate recovery — critical for athletes who need to sprint repeatedly throughout a match.

Conditioning

Periodisation

Training stress must be systematically varied — progressive overload followed by deload weeks — to allow supercompensation. We structure your programme around your competitive season, peaking conditioning and speed for the most important periods of your year.

Conditioning

Recovery & Adaptation

Speed adaptations happen during rest, not training. Sleep (8–9h for youth athletes), nutrition timing, active recovery, and our Yoga & Mobility classes accelerate recovery and keep your nervous system primed for the next quality session.

Conditioning

Test Your Conditioning

Our RSA test gives you an exact fatigue index. Know your numbers. Build from them.

Season 2026–27 · Observational Only · No Intervention

What You're Signing Up For

Phase 1 is a non-intervention observational study. There are no exercise prescriptions, no treatment arms, and no randomisation. Your athlete attends three assessment sessions across the season — and simply gets tested using the same elite-standard equipment used across Premier League academies. That's it.

What Happens

Three assessment waves across the season (August, January, May). Each session takes approximately 60–90 minutes and involves physical testing on a football pitch, followed by a tablet-based cognitive assessment in a private area.

Physical Testing

Photon Sports — Sprint & Agility

  • Countermovement Jump (CMJ) — explosive leg power
  • 30m Sprint with split times (0–10m, 10–20m, 20–30m)
  • 505 Agility test — both legs
  • Acceleration-deceleration
  • Anthropometry & maturity offset

VALD ForceDecks — Force Plate Analysis

  • CMJ bilateral — peak force, rate of force development, jump height
  • CMJ unilateral — limb symmetry index
  • Drop jump — reactive strength index
  • Early vs late force development ratios

Cognitive Testing

A university-led tablet-based cognitive battery assessing temporal processing, executive function, visuospatial working memory, and dual-task performance. Administered immediately after physical testing by a research assistant — no coaching staff present.

Our Sites — London, Birmingham & Manchester

Phase 1 runs across three data collection sites in England, covering all major regions. Elite Player Performance leads the Birmingham site (Sutton Coldfield), with partner sites operating in London and Manchester simultaneously.

  • Birmingham — Sutton Coldfield (Elite Player Performance)
  • London — South London site
  • Manchester — Greater Manchester site

Approximately 65 youth players aged U10–U16 recruited per site — 195 total.

Safeguarding & Ethics

All research assistants hold enhanced DBS certificates, FA Safeguarding Children certification, and FA Level 1 badges. A Designated Safeguarding Officer is present at every session. Ethics approved by university ethics committee. Full UK GDPR compliance.

What Your Athlete Gets

  • Full Photon Sports physical profile — the same report used by Premier League academies
  • Cognitive assessment results shared with parents/guardians
  • Three seasons of tracked development data
  • Priority access to Phase 2 intervention programmes (2027–28)
  • Club development report at season end

Important: Signing up via the form below registers your interest in Phase 1 — the observational study. Participation involves no treatment, no exercise prescription, and no randomisation. You are signing up to have your athlete assessed and measured, three times across the season. Full participant information sheets will be provided before any data collection begins.
