Rugby Academy Trial Preparation — Physical Standards & EPP Data

By Ben Royal · Elite Player Performance

Rugby union academies assess physical capability from day one of trial. Understanding what scouts are measuring — and verifying your athlete is within benchmark — is the most controllable element of preparation.

Physical Standards for Rugby Academy Trials

Unlike football academies which have relatively standardised benchmarks, rugby academy trials assess physical qualities through a position lens. However, universal standards apply across positions:

  • Forwards (U16): 10m sprint under 1.70s · Broad jump over 200cm · Grip strength over 38kg
  • Backs (U16): 10m sprint under 1.55s · 30m sprint under 4.30s · T-test under 10.8s
  • All positions: Bilateral leg strength symmetry within 10%
