Why S&C for Youth Athletes

Build The
Foundation

Strength training for young athletes is one of the most evidence-backed interventions in sports science. When delivered correctly — with appropriate loads, technique focus and progression — it reduces injury risk, improves performance and builds physical confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Our youth S&C classes are designed specifically for developing athletes. No barbells, no heavy loads — progressive bodyweight, resistance band and medicine ball work that builds the movement foundations elite athletes are built on.

Strength Foundations

Fundamental movement patterns — squat, hinge, push, pull and carry. Perfect technique established before any load is added. The base all athletic power is built on.

Coordination & Motor Skills

Balance, proprioception and multi-joint movement control. Especially valuable for athletes aged U8–U12 in the critical developmental window.

Injury Prevention

Hip stability, ankle strength and landing mechanics — the areas most linked to youth sports injuries. Our programme proactively addresses the most common injury risk factors.

Programme Structure

Age-Appropriate
Development

Our S&C programme is periodised across the training year and adapted by age group. What a U10 does differs significantly from a U16 — loading, complexity and volume all scaled appropriately.

  • Fundamental movement patterns
  • Balance and coordination
  • Bodyweight only
  • Games-based approach
  • Fun, high engagement

The Evidence

Why It Works

The sports science on youth strength training is clear. A 2017 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that strength training reduces injury rates in young athletes by up to 68%. Separately, research consistently shows that athletes who complete structured S&C programmes in their developmental years outperform peers in speed, power and endurance measurements by the time they reach senior competition.

Our S&C programme is designed around this evidence base — periodised across the training year, adapted by age group, and delivered by coaches with formal strength and conditioning qualifications.

Up to 68% Injury Reduction

Meta-analysis evidence showing youth strength training significantly reduces sport-related injury rates — the strongest case for any physical intervention in youth sport.

Long-Term Athletic Development

Athletes who train S&C during the U10–U16 window show measurably better physical qualities by the time they reach senior competition — regardless of their primary sport.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is strength training safe for young athletes?
Yes — when delivered correctly. Our sessions use evidence-based programming with appropriate loads for each age group. Youth strength training, when well-coached, is one of the safest and most beneficial interventions in youth sport.
Will it stunt growth?
No. This is a myth thoroughly disproved by sports science research. Correctly programmed youth strength training does not affect growth plates or long-term development.
What equipment is used?
Bodyweight, resistance bands, medicine balls, TRX and light dumbbells. No barbells in the younger age groups. All equipment is provided.
Can my child do S&C and SAQ classes?
Absolutely — and this is ideal. Combined S&C and SAQ training addresses both physical strength and movement speed simultaneously, producing the best overall athletic development outcomes.
My child plays football / rugby / tennis — is this relevant?
Yes. Strength and conditioning is the physical foundation of all sports. The qualities developed — strength, power, coordination, resilience — transfer directly to performance in any sport.
