What Is SAQ?

Speed. Agility.
Quickness.

SAQ (Speed, Agility and Quickness) training is the foundation of all athletic movement. Our classes use science-backed methods to develop the key physical qualities that make athletes faster, sharper and harder to beat — regardless of their sport.

Delivered at Alexander Stadium — the same venue that hosted the 2022 Commonwealth Games athletics — our sessions give youth athletes access to the same training environment used by elite performers.

Sprint Mechanics

Acceleration technique, drive phase mechanics, top-end speed development and deceleration control. Athletes learn how to run faster — not just how to run harder.

Agility & Change of Direction

Multi-directional movement, reactive agility drills and 505 agility progressions. Essential for all field and court sports.

Plyometrics & Power

Age-appropriate jumping, bounding and reactive drills to develop explosive power. Builds the elastic energy system that underpins athletic performance.

Session Structure

What Happens in a Session

Every session follows a structured format designed by our FA-approved coaching team. Sessions are grouped by age to ensure appropriate training loads.

01

Dynamic Warm-Up (10 min)

Movement preparation, mobility drills and activation exercises. Prepares the body for high-intensity work and reduces injury risk.

02

Sprint Mechanics (15 min)

Technique drills — posture, arm drive, foot strike and cadence. Athletes develop efficient sprint mechanics before adding speed.

03

Speed & Agility Drills (20 min)

Ladder drills, cone patterns, reactive agility games and speed endurance work. Varied each session to maintain engagement and drive adaptation.

04

Plyometrics (10 min)

Age-appropriate explosive power training — broad jumps, bounding, hurdle hops and depth drops for older athletes.

05

Cool-Down & Debrief (5 min)

Static stretching, breathing and a brief coaching point for athletes to take away and practise before next session.

FAQ

Common Questions

What age groups are catered for?
U8 through to U18. Sessions are grouped by age so training loads are appropriate for each developmental stage.
Do athletes need any experience?
No. Sessions are suitable for all ability levels. Our coaches adapt the programme to challenge beginners and advanced athletes equally.
What should athletes wear and bring?
Athletic clothing, appropriate trainers or spikes for the track surface, and a water bottle. We provide all training equipment.
Is there a commitment or membership required?
No. Sessions are pay-as-you-go at £10 each. Book as many or as few as suits your schedule.
Can athletes combine SAQ classes with a full assessment?
Yes — and we recommend it. An initial performance assessment gives us baseline data to personalise your athlete's development within the SAQ sessions.
